Ms Stephanie Pollock, a dedicated educator at Hoi An International School, brings a unique blend of experiences and a deep-rooted passion for early childhood education to her classroom.
Raised on a rural goat farm in California, Ms Stephanie hails from a small town with a population of fewer than 1,000, celebrated for its golden hills and rocky bluffs. Born into a large family, the prospect of a proper education often felt like a distant dream. However, she never gave up on her aspirations and her desire to rise and shine. Her upbringing instilled in her a profound love for nature, a commitment to play-based learning, and a desire to explore new cultures, all of which have led her on a remarkable journey in education.
What is the motivation behind your efforts?
My hometown was very rural with little opportunity for locals. I saw so many individuals caught in a continual cyclic struggle. I knew that no matter what, I wanted something different for myself- and the only way to do that was to relocate and work as hard as I could for a strong base and foundation in a place that had opportunities – shared Stephanie.
In pursuit of her dreams, Stephanie left behind her childhood memories and embarked on a journey to attend the University of California Los Angeles, where she graduated with honours. After graduation, she began working as a substitute teacher in Los Angeles, but soon decided to take a leap of faith and follow her calling to teach abroad.
Traveling abroad for the first time and alone, she booked a one-way ticket to Hanoi, Vietnam, where she embarked on a journey of educational discovery. With a new language and culture to navigate, feelings of fear and anxiety were to be expected. However, she quickly fell in love with the charm, kindness, and warmth of the people and lifestyle in Vietnam. Her plans to experience the country for just a year while teaching, quickly faded as her admiration and love for the country grew deeper.
She explored various teaching niches, including English as Second Language, Academic Management, science, and social-emotional learning. Eventually, she found her true passion at a Reggio Emilia preschool. The child-centered, inquiry-based approach of Reggio Emilia resonated with her, and she realised she had discovered her ideal teaching environment.
Why do you choose Early Years education over other sectors?
It might sound silly to say, but it was like coming home. I had been in many other educational avenues over the years, but with my very first full-time Early Years position, everything just clicked into place. I was not just excited to come to work every day, but I felt immense gratitude and a genuine desire to learn as much as I could.
To further deepen her expertise, Stephanie pursued a master’s degree in Early Years education. This academic pursuit equipped her with the knowledge and skills to provide a nurturing and stimulating learning environment for young children.
What are your thoughts on Early Years education at HAIS?
I am so appreciative of the school campus, especially the garden and the opportunity to help our youngest learners understand the beauty and awe of nature. In order for little ones to grow up and want to take care of this planet, we have to teach them to love it and be amazed by it first.
Stephanie’s rural upbringing has significantly influenced her teaching philosophy. She believes in the power of play-based learning and incorporates nature-inspired activities into her lessons. Her love for the outdoors and her understanding of the natural world create a rich and engaging learning experience for her students.
