We are proud to have held our first HAIS graduation ceremony and clap-out on June 17, 2024 to celebrate our Class of 2024 Year 13 students as the first HAIS graduating class: Sam Lambert, Kiana Kocsis, and Jinto Borwell. It was their last walk through the Blue Gates as HAIS students, ready to embark on their next journey in life. Ready to follow their passions and realise their dreams!
While Sam and Jinto decided to take some time off to consider their further educational prospects, Kiana was keen to move on to her next phase. Sparked by her long-lying interest in history and geography, she had applied for a scholarship to the University of Pécs in Hungary to study archaeology in January, flying to Bangkok for an interview at the Embassy of Hungary as a diaspora student. Archaeology had long been Kiana’s area of passion with the ultimate goal to study Marine Archaeology at Master’s degree level.
It wasn’t until later in the week after graduation that Kiana received the news – she had been accepted into the University of Pécs on a full-ride scholarship! It had been a five month, nail-biting wait while preparing for and completing her A Level exams. It now turned into a tumultuous summer of dive certifications, sorting documents, planning, shopping, packing and then – off to Budapest!
After a three-day whirlwind of exploring the sights and savouring the tastes of the capital city of Hungary, Kiana was off to settle into her new life in Pécs. As part of her scholarship, Kiana will be learning the Magyar nyelv or Hungarian language, and taking Hungarian culture classes. She will also be attending cultural events around the country as part of her paternal lineage, with grandparents who had immigrated to the U.S. as post WWII refugees. It is rewarding to watch a child grow and pursue their passions and have the world as their oyster, knowing that anything is possible in the future.
Life in Hoi An is rapidly growing smaller in Kiana’s rear-view mirror but it is also a testament to the well-grounded foundation developed at HAIS, where we embrace a well-balanced approach to academics and personal growth. It is through a community spirit and supportive nurturing environment that we are able to prepare our students to become independent and lifelong learners. We encourage all our students to find their own pathways into the future and to know they are well-supported by all of us at HAIS.
Viszlát, Kiana! We look forward to welcoming you back for a visit and hearing more about your experiences in Europe!
